PIM, AI and machine learning: working smarter with product data.

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are currently the most discussed topics in tech. But can you actually apply AI and Machine Learning to product management?

If so, how can you make these technologies work for you in combination with your PIM or product management software? At ConnectingTheDots, we have been exploring AI and Machine Learning in the context of product management for some time. Good product data starts before your PIM, and in this blog, we present several practical applications that are relatively straightforward to implement within a Product Information Management system.

Product recognition based on images.

Machine Learning can be applied directly to product images to extract valuable information. By analysing an image, Machine Learning models can identify colour profiles, product types and specific features. This data can then be utilised for several business objectives.

Firstly, for product classification: Based on visual information extracted from an image (using services like Amazon Rekognition), a Product Information Management system can automatically classify a product. This provides a significant efficiency boost compared to employees manually assigning categories. Secondly, the features generated via Machine Learning can be used to automatically populate missing product attributes within the system, ensuring one governed product data foundation.

Populating product content automatically.

AI is highly effective at enriching product content, particularly for product titles and descriptions. The process works by sending product attributes (such as brand, material, colour or season) from the PIM to an AI tool like ChatGPT. The AI then generates a coherent product description.

Beyond the efficiency gain of not requiring a content specialist to write every text from scratch, this method ensures unique product content is generated for different platforms. You can even take this a step further by using AI to generate multiple variations of a description for different sales channels.

Naturally, these two examples can be combined: first, generate attributes based on a product image, and then use those attributes to fuel the AI content generator. While AI and Machine Learning are powerful tools, it is vital to remember: always check the output. AI is not yet flawless, so validation Workflows & AI remain essential to keep people focused on exceptions rather than repetitive tasks.

Can AI automatically generate product descriptions?

Yes, AI can automatically generate product descriptions based on existing attributes and keywords. This process, known as Natural Language Generation (NLG), speeds up content creation and ensures consistency in tone of voice and style, supporting your marketing efforts across all channels.

What are the benefits of AI for product classification in PIM?

AI accelerates and improves product classification by automatically categorising large volumes of data within a defined taxonomy. This reduces manual errors, ensures consistency across different channels and increases product discoverability on e-commerce platforms.

How does ConnectingTheDots support the integration of AI and Machine Learning?

ConnectingTheDots provides a PIM platform designed for integration with advanced AI and Machine Learning tools. This allows organisations to automate and optimise processes such as data onboarding via the Import & Onboarding component, as well as enrichment and publishing.
